September 12th. Finally had time to post the Cannonball Run details..
Gearing up for he Cannonball, told by Steve Coe and Paul…written by Vanessa Lynn
Coe and Vanessa meet with Larry Wood at his shop a week or so before the run. Meeting the teams right hand man Peter along with Steve Davis from Rogue Cycles.. Paul arrived in town on Monday the 5th. At 8 am on the 6th we arrive at Larry's shop finding Paul already awake and ready to roll in the Motor Coach, shortly thereafter Larry arrives.. One or two overlooked details, a quick cup of coffee and bisquit and the team is off and running..
After arriving to Kitty Hawk, there were mandatory meetings and lot's of mingling with old friends and making new ones too. Finally the day arrives the Motorcycle Cannonball is officially starting, it is September 10 and follows as below…
Day 1- Starting the ride along the ocean in Kitty Hawk, Paul’s heart races as he finds it unbelievable that the Motorcycle Cannonball has finally come to fruition. Making it through the first day was fairly uneventful, resting for the night at Greenville, SC.
Day 2- Pulled out at 7 am.. , every mile had some issues. The leather belt shrunk and Paul could not stop for more than 10 seconds. The idler pulley belt started to burn. Once they arrived they put on a new primary belt and were going to put a new idler belt, but it was too short, so they made one out of a borrowed man’s leather belt. Off and running Paul is chased by 3 dogs and clipped by a woman in a car making a turn, she never even knew she hit him.
After almost getting ran over, by the latter part of the day Paul got into hills of NC heading towards Tennessee.. Cruising at 33 mph all day. In order to get up the hills Paul goes down a big hill getting up to 51 mph, all this time he is tucked in with his head down and by the time he gets to top of hill his speeds drop to 19 to 21 mph.. this is how he is making this 1913 single belt drive machine climb the hills. As we are running in 3rd place and have a perfect score, we are tied in points however with a woman from Germany and she is ahead of us in the rankings due the fact the fact she is riding an older machine..
Day 3- Riding half of the journey today, Paul, as he is allowed to decided to trailer up some of the steeper inclines. Arrived at Maggie Valley this afternoon.
